David Roentgen - Short biography

He was the son of the art and cabinet carpenter Abraham Roentgen (1711-1793) and on 11 August 1743 in gentleman Hague with Buedingen was born, like his father so was also he member of the Herrnhuter brother-common.  1753 settled the family in Neuwied.  In the year 1772 Abraham Roentgen transferred its business to him, continued to participate however regardless of its still in the workshop.  One year after the business transfer he married the daughter of the minister Scheuren from Elsaessi.  Because of its far-stretched entrepreneur plans, which ueberfluegelten the economically powerful municipality, it was excluded from this.  After large efforts it was again accepted 1791.
 
On 8 May 1774 he got a trade privilege, which to him the freeness opposite a guild and the free use of a property enabled.  But it, like its father, was accepted to the citizen municipality.  From then on X-raying name was unsolvably connected with the name of the city Neuwied.
Within shortest time David Roentgen brought his business to such bloom that he had temporarily filled more than 100 hobelbaenke.  The list from July 1779 indicates the names of 30 associates.  Its workshop produced desk and roll desks, bureaus and corner cabinets, dressing-tables, seat furniture, Schatullen, clocks and music instruments.  To the peculiarities of Roentgen furniture usually a refined technical configuration with geheimfaechern and complicated mechanisms belongs.  To the Zarin a Katharina IITH schreibschrank supplied from Russia had even an alarm installation:  a play factory announced the grasp of an unauthorized one into a geheimfach.

Roentgen came to the insight that the personal contact with its erlauchten customers the sales of its goods was favorable.  Its journeys led it to that Paris yard, to London, Brussels, Berlin and Petersburg.

The French revolution taught heaviest losses to its enterprise.  The republicans expropriated his furniture defeat in Paris and explained it as the hostile emigrant.  Its relations with the large world broke together.When the Frenchman armies 1795 achieved and in Neuwied penetrated the Rhine, Roentgen closed its newagain workshop, resolved the business and created supplies and mechanism away.  1802 it returned to Neuwied, but the attempt to open a new enterprise in Prussia failed, since nobody wanted to afford more such furniture or could.
