Day of Navy

Beginning of Navy parad on Cruiser "Aurora" in Saint Peterburg

Russian Emperor Peter the I created the tradition of Navy parades. This Emperor is called "The father of Russian Navy". At 1696 high legislative department "Boyarskaya Duma" made edict about Building Russian Navy. There were established some dockyards in our country.

The most powerful of them was the main Admiralty in Saint Petersburg. The building of this shipyard was used for the purpose. The Admiralty played an important role as a fortress in the city center. According to the rules of military engineering of that time, it was prohibited to build up the area around a fortress so that enemy could not approach its walls undercover of the adjacent buildings. Till nowadays there are open expanses of the Palace square, the Decembrists' Square and the Admiralty Square around the building of Admiralty. Peter the I made first plan of the building at 1704. Now we can see there the building of Russian architect Zakharov made from 1806 till 1823 in the style of classicism.

Modern Day of Navy was established at 1939. It is celebrated at the last Sunday of July.
Saint Petersburg is a "Sea Capital" in Baltic region of Russia. So it is the main arena for celebrations at Day of Navy. Usually some ships are situated at the embankments of the Neva River this day. There are also a water-sport holyday and water competitions on boats ant other vessels on the Neva River.

The Neva emankment at Winter Palace

Traditionally the first of all events at the Day of Navy is a parade of sailors on the Cruiser "Aurora". This cruiser is named "the Cruiser of Revolution". It made his historical shoot at October 1917 when Soviet regime was established. Built at the Saint Petersburg shipyard, the cruiser was launched in 1903 and fought in the battles of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Not long before February revolution of 1917 it was placed in dock for the general overhaul. In October 1917 the sailors of the "Aurora" joined the insurgent people. On the night of October 25 (November 7), on the orders of the Military Revolutionary Committee, the cruiser sailed into the Neva and dropped anchor. It trained its guns on the brightly illuminated windows of the Winter Palace, the seat of Provisional Government. At 21 hours 45 minutes the "Aurora" gave a signal for the storming of the Winter Palace. It became a signal of new era, of new world.

The Day of Navy is in the middle of summer. All students have their summer vacations that day. So there are not special events in our university this time. But all our students think that this celebration are partly their as our university is State Marine Technical (the Shipbuilding Institute in previous time).
