Day of Army (23 of February) was established as a celebration at 1922. That time Soviet government "Day of Red Army" called it. This date was selected as a memory about the battle of first regiments of Red Guards against the regular troops of German.
After the USSR was disintegrated this holyday was named "The Day of Fatherland Defender". Almost all Russian men have a reason to celebrate this holyday, as there is a whole conscription in Russia. After became 18 years old all healthy men have to serve at
Army or Navy minimum for two years.
The Day of Army also is the only calendar day in the whole year which Russian men can suppose their own "Men Day". Two weeks later Russian women have their famous "Women Day" - a holyday of Spring and Love. So at the Day of Army all women congratulate the strong half of mankind and thank them for protection and love. Women congratulate their fathers, husbands, sons, boy friends, and business partners with a good dinner, special postcards and often with playful self-made poems. Here is the example of such poem:
